A 35-year-old woman in Rubanda District is on the run after allegedly killing her husband.
Joventa Salimu is accused of killing Andrew Byomugabe, a nurse and resident of Ndego Trading Centre in Kashasha Parish, Ikumba Sub-county, on Thursday evening.
Byomugabe had previously separated from Salimu and married another woman, identified as Praize Atuheire. Recently, Salimu returned, claiming she had reformed and wished to reconcile. Byomugabe accepted her back.
However, on Thursday at around 6:00 p.m., while Byomugabe was resting in a room where he operates a drug shop at Ndego Trading Centre, Salimu allegedly attacked him with a sharp object, striking him several times in the head. Byomugabe died instantly.
The deceased’s son, Hillary Akampumuza, discovered the body lying in a pool of blood. When he raised an alarm, Salimu initially dismissed the concerns, claiming Byomugabe had traveled to Mbarara City to sell timber. She then vanished and went into hiding.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, noting that Byomugabe’s body was found with a grey sweater tied around his head. Maate said a postmortem examination was conducted, and the body has been handed over to relatives for burial. He added that efforts to arrest the suspect are ongoing.
