Agasirwe Remanded Over Kagezi Murder

Local NewsAgasirwe Remanded Over Kagezi Murder

Senior Superintendent of Police Nixon Agasirwe, former head of the Special Investigations Unit, has been remanded to prison on charges of murdering Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Kagezi. He appeared before the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court and was charged with one count of murder, which allegedly occurred on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, Kampala.

The court heard that Agasirwe, along with others still at large, caused Kagezi’s death with malice aforethought. Due to the capital nature of the charges, Agasirwe could not take a plea and was remanded until July 8, 2025. He attempted to seek bail, but the Magistrate advised that the High Court has exclusive jurisdiction over such matters.

Agasirwe’s arrest follows the testimony of Daniel Kisekka, a convict in the Kagezi case, who told the High Court that Agasirwe gave them UGX 500,000 to kill the prosecutor. Kisekka was earlier sentenced to 35 years in prison after confessing and cooperating with the court.

According to prosecutors, new leads beyond Kisekka’s confession led to Agasirwe’s arrest, marking a significant breakthrough after ten years of investigation.

This brings the number of suspected participants in Kagezi’s murder to four. The other three still on trial are John Kibuuka, John Masajjagge, and Nasur Abudallah Mugonole, who face charges of terrorism and murder.

Agasirwe is no stranger to prison. He was previously detained from 2017 to 2022 on separate charges including illegal possession of ammunition and involvement in the unlawful repatriation of Rwandan refugees. He was charged alongside former IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura and several senior police officers.

Also linked to these broader security-related cases was Abdullah Kitatta, former patron of Boda Boda 2010, who was convicted and has since completed his sentence.
