The Webuild-led consortium building the Italian side of the Brenner Base Tunnel – the world’s longest railway tunnel under the Alps – has bored through to the Austrian border with TBM “Flavia”.
When complete, the tunnel will connect the cities of Fortezza in Italy to Innsbruck in Austria.
It will carry passenger trains travelling at speeds up to 250km/h, cutting travel time between the two cities from 80 minutes to 25.
It runs under the Brenner Pass, which forms the border between the two countries.
Webuild says overall progress on the Italian side, known as Lot Mules 2–3, now stands at over 95%.
Webuild is also working on the Austrian side of the tunnel, with the Gola del Sill-Pfons Lot, having already completed the Tulfes-Pfons Lot, also on the Austrian side of the border.
The Group has also built the Isarco Underpass, which marks the southernmost point of the Tunnel before reaching the Fortezza station.
The Brenner Base Tunnel is a crucial part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor in the EU’s TEN-T network because it goes under the considerable barrier formed by the Alps.
