A prominent moneylender operating at the Uganda-Rwanda border in Katuna Town Council, Kabale District, has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife over suspected infidelity. Andrew Mugabe, a Rwandan national from Burera District, is accused of killing his wife, Donatelle Mukandayisenga, also known as Shantari, on Saturday.
It is reported that Mugabe had previously gone into hiding for several years to evade arrest over allegations of possessing ivory. Upon his recent return, he was shocked to find that Mukandayisenga had given birth to a child fathered by an unidentified man.
The discovery reportedly fueled ongoing tensions between the couple, culminating in a violent altercation on Saturday. During the fight, Mugabe allegedly assaulted Mukandayisenga severely. She was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital but succumbed to her injuries later in the evening.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the incident, stating that Mugabe is currently detained at Kabale Police Station as investigations continue.
